Summary: Making a sandwich.
Author's Note: The assignment was to find a picture of a person online. That person was then your character and they had to make a sandwich. The point of it was to practice character development through describing a mundane task, it was actually pretty fun.

Her mother was an amazing cook. She remembered sitting in the kitchen as a kid, perched on her designated stool next to the stove, watching foods simmering in pots and pans. She liked the curls of deliciously scented steam that would rise from them while things were sautéed, fried, or boiled. She learned the ins and outs of cooking from atop that stool, skills that she called into practice everyday now that she was out on her own.

She cranked up the the volume on the stereo and headed into the kitchen, dancing to the beat as she gathered ingredients. Turkey, havarti, bacon, and a loaf of sourdough bread all piled into her arms before she dumped the load onto the counter in a heap and went to get more; doubling her hoard before she even began cooking. She took a frying pan of the hook on the wall, swaying her hips as she set it on the stove and clicked on the burner.

The bacon was first, dropping into the pan with a satisfying sizzle. The sound of bacon frying elicited fond memories of dew-heavy grass dappled with morning sunlight making the lawn shine like gems. Her mother had always made a big breakfast Saturday mornings in the summer. Everyone would gather around the table laden with eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, pitchers of orange juice, and fresh fruit and share a meal.

While the room filled with the delicious scent of bacon she whisked together eggs, milk, flour, and vanilla preparing a thin batter. She rinsed her fingers after cracking each egg. She had grown an aversion to slimy egg whites after her brother had smashed several over her head as a prank. She’d chased him around the house until finally tackling him into the pool. Now, years later, they laughed about it.

Gracefully, she twirled her way across the kitchen on tiptoe and deposited the bowl into the fridge to chill. The door quietly shut as the music picked back up and she rocked out, her black hair carelessly flying about her face, one arm thrust above her head as she belted out the lyrics. She danced back over to the stove, flipped the bacon and pulled two thick slices of sourdough out of the bag. She set these on the cutting board and piled them high with thin slices of turkey and cheese. She snacked on a few slices of turkey while she waited for the bacon, savoring the sweet maple hints it carried from the glaze it had been cooked in. She looked over her handy work, something was missing...

“Oil!”

She smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand and pulled down another pan, filling it with a thin coating of vegetable oil before turning the heat on medium. By then the bacon was perfectly crisped and she balanced the pieces atop the turkey and cheese before mashing the two halves together, cutting it in half, and piercing them with toothpicks. The sandwich was a good two inches thick and she wasn’t even finished with it yet.

She pulled the batter out of the fridge and dipped her finger in, popping it into her mouth. Perfect. It was just sweet enough. Each half of the sandwich was dunked, bread soaking up the batter -like making french toast-  then carefully nestled into the hot oil. The sweet/savory combo was why this sandwich was her favorite. The perfect balance of turkey, tangy cheese, and salty bacon, offset by the sweetened bread. Absolute bliss.

The sandwich fried up quickly, only taking a minute or two on each side before it was perfectly toasted, gooey cheese melting over the folds of turkey. She slid it onto the waiting plate and dusted it with a bit of powdered sugar, the required finishing touch.

The first bite was sublime. This was the way food should always be.
